Starting work can be a very scary for anyone at any age no matter how confident you think you are. To give yourself the best possible chance to avoid making the first few mistakes, consider the following:

Starting times:
Confirm with the manager, the date and time you are to commence and if find out if you need to report to someone else other than them. Write down that person’s name.

Do you need any tools to commence you job:
Depending on the job you have gained, you may need a small supply of your own tools. Clarify the requirements before you commence so you have a chance to be fully prepared to commence the position.

What is the company’s dress standard:
If a uniform is supplied, you may be working for a day or so before your arrives so confirm what else is appropriate till that time. If the company does not have a uniform, than ask for a copy of the dress code.

Paper work:
Usually on your first day you will spend time completing the commencement paper work. You will need at the very least; your tax file number, bank account details, copy of your birth certificate and other relevant documents. Confirm what else they will need – before you commence.

Know exactly where you need to be:
Find out where you should report on the first day, some company’s have offices on different floors or in different locations so to avoid any mistakes clarify where you need to be.

Parking:
If you are driving to your new job, you will need to know where the staff parking is located. You may need an access code or key to get in and out.

Travel:
If you are traveling by public transport then you really do need to do some research. Get a timetable and do a dry run to make sure you allow enough time to get from the drop off point to work.
What about the cost; it may be cheaper to get a weekly ticket and you don’t have to waste time queuing for tickets each day.
Don’t forget to put this money aside from you pay each week.
