The changing world of work:
In today’s changing world of work you will probably change jobs many times over your working career. Gone are the days when someone had just one job for their lifetime. Returning to work
During your career you may try many different positions and the reasons you do so will be to fit in with your current lifestyle needs at that time. New technology also means that there are new positions being created and some of those old jobs – for example the typewriter repair man; may be long gone, however the transferable skills can be used in the changing world of work. Thinking of changing careers?
Many of these occupations involve working with computer-based systems, procedures, machinery and the Internet. Many of the occupations of the future will mean being self-employed, or working in small business. The changing world of work will provide many opportunities for those who are prepared for them. This will mean being able to identify opportunities, show initiative and flexibility by being creative and working in teams.
Consider things that will make the difference to your career path:
Values- You need to take into consideration what your values are when thinking about a job – will your values prevent you from doing some aspects of the positions.
Interests- You may be thinking about a career in the retail industry as you like customer service, have great cash handling skills and like to assist people; however you really dislike the young screaming children and the grumpy people who are rude and thankless.
Personality- Some people are born to be public speakers and some are born to be librarians; if you are one looking for a quiet place to work and are offered a position at a night club – I would imagine that you are not going to like you job much if at all. Your personality does assist in choosing the correct job.
Lifestyle- Consider what your lifestyle is now, what you would like it to be in now, in twelve months time, in two years time. What do you need to do to make this happen? Is it money, hours of work or both?
